November

A Month of Being

The beginning of November found us leaving Missoula. We parked at friends of a friend’s shop for that first weekend and had the privilege of attending a church service with their little house group. We enjoyed the fellowship and the boys were delighted to find more boys their age to befriend!

Sunday afternoon we headed to Washington state. We parked south-west of Spokane and ended up staying for the month! Cheney, WA was the nearest town, sometimes we parked at the RV park to do laundry, dump our tanks and refill with fresh water, but mostly we boon-docked.

I had planned and promised, before we had headed out, to return home to the Creston area and be present for a significant moment in one of my dear friend’s life. Eric also needed to travel during November, but it was back to Pennsylvania for work, and so we chose to park and to just BE while we fulfilled our commitments. I was close enough to drive home to Creston and Eric could fly out of Spokane - win, win!

We got a nasty virus that seemed to want to hang on for longer than we thought necessary. I lost my voice for a few days and fought fever and sore throat. Both the boys got tight and croupy as well. We laid low for a lot of the month and I think it was good for all of us! Plus, I was thankful we didn’t have plans that had to be canceled because of sickness.

Our boon-docking days were mostly enjoyable with a few moments of frustration and “ why are we doing this to ourselves?” questions along the way. We hiked and biked and played lots of board games as a family. We enjoyed beautiful fall weather, and were stuck inside for what felt like day after day of rain. Our generator fought us at the worst times possible and we got down right chilly some nights. I think it’s all just called life, but somehow it seems different on the road.

Amongst all the new and exciting we are also creating our rhythm of daily life - Eric’s continued and familiar work schedule, school mornings for the boys and I. What to have for supper?! And just really making the RV home. I told Eric one day that I felt so jealous that all he had to do was move his office to a different room and his life continued as usual! The adjustments were harder than I’d anticipated (turns out I’m not as flexible as I like to think I am) and I really missed my girlfriends to get together with.

We thought we were all ready to leave WA just after Thanksgiving, but my mouth decided to create suspicion and infection, so we ended up staying longer and getting a few opinions on what was going on. The first dentist we saw immediately wanted to do a root canal on the tooth in front of the 11 year old hole where a wisdom tooth had been extracted from, which is where the issue lies. I wasn’t so sure I needed a root canal, because this has been an ongoing issue that just got worse so… We got a second opinion. Second opinion was… When the wisdom tooth was extracted the jaw bone may have been broken and there is now communication between the sinus and the cavity where the tooth had been. This made sense to us, but suddenly we’re looking at oral surgery and/or bone grafting… And November turns to December while we take time to make a plan.
